With a fair mileage behind me, and no more sea to cross, it felt that Glasgow was only behind a hill. As my greatest supporters, my folks were determined to meet me before my return home. As they did not manage to catch me on Mull or in Oban, their last chance was Inveraray - a place we seem to frequent and take a lot of our guests to. We agreed to rendezvous for lunch, so I better pedal on!

Day 13: Final Sprint

Distance 100 miles / Elevation 1300 meters

As much as I would love to bombard you with not super exciting images of A85, the first photo-worthy place, by bear's standards, was St Conan's Kirk on Loch Awe. This gorgeous mini-cathedral was built by a man called Walter Cambell in the late 19th century. The nearest church in Dalmally, 4 miles away was too far for his elderly mother to travel to, so he decided to build one near their home. On the side facing the road this kirk may not look that extraordinary, but the inside and south/east part of the structure are absolutely incredible. Highly recommend it!

Having had a wee moment of peace in the kirk’s absolutely gorgeous main hall I headed on over Glen Aray to the town of Inveraray itself.

Inveraray Bay on Loch Fyne

With a familiar watchtower on Dun na Cuaiche hill in the background (visited many times), two bears meet in Inveraray. Ed, as always, is keen to know all about my travels, my physical and mental state, my weight, my muscle aches and other aches also! So I tell him the lot. I know that for past couple of weeks he has been daily checking FB for my progress and proudly putting pins on the map back home at every place I had lunch and on each spot I pitched my tent.

After the lunch with my folks, the idea was to camp somewhere on Loch Fyne and tackle the remaining stretch of the road the following day, but in true spirit of the moment I have decided that wouldn't mind sleeping in my own bed now. After all Glasgow was only 55 miles away!

Having stocked up on oatmeal bars in the shop, I continued up the long climb to Rest And Be Thankful, and after a quick cup of tea, flew down the hill to Arrochar.

In Arrochar I waved to the Cobbler (love that hill) and made my way across to Tarbet and onto to Loch Lomond. The night was drawing in, so I put all the lights on and made the final dash to Glasgow.

The great Glenlee was there to meet me.

Having zoomed (by now I should really say: barely managed to pedal) past a couple of our city's landmarks, crawled up High Street, into the nearest kebab shop, ordered 16 inch pizza, 2 cans of coke, got into my flat, inhaled the food and fell asleep in my bed. Done!

I cannot express my gratitude enough to my friends and sponsors for the support of this venture and tremendous help in raising funds for Arts / Theatre Project of St.Petersburg Internat. Every single pound of the amount raised has been handed over in person directly to the charity. The amount raised will make a significant contribution to the wonderful work being done there!

It's been an absolute pleasure pedalling for this cause, and a very rewarding experience.

Please visit the Cause Page for more info about the charity the funds were being raised for and Donations Page for the full list of the sponsors. Hat's off to all of ya!
