OK, so I feel like a civilised human for one night. Enough of that - back on the road. At the end of today’s journey I want to end up in Applecross, at the foot of my next challenge - Bealach Na Ba pass. Though I only have just over 30 miles to go, today’s terrain consists of roller-coaster road pretty much all the way.

Day 6: Torridon - Applecross

Distance 32 miles / Elevation 900 meters

Loch Shieldaig.

Loch Chracaich

That was a very long way up.. Somewhere near Ardheslaig (I think it’s Beinn Alligin on the left)

An “O” missing, - otherwise a great sign!

As the road bends to the left and heads south, shortly after Fearnmore, an incredible landscape unfolds. On the other side of Inner Sound, the first stretch of land is Isle of Raasay (left) and Rona (right). Bigger hills behind are Isle of Skye..

Somewhere at the north end of Raasay, lies a stretch of road built by Calum MacLeod, a local resident who, after numerous unsuccessful campaigns to the local authorities for building a road to his beloved Arnish at the north end of Raasay, decided to build the road himself.

Isle of Skye, the one in the background, is to be conquered in two days time, but for now Applecross is just around the corner.

Applecross Campsite boasts it’s “Flower Tunnel” - a sheltered garden where anyone is welcome to relax during their stay. The cafe here was closed for renovation so I went to the local watering hole, The Applecross Inn. The food there was delicious, and I had the best rhubarb crumble I have ever tasted (and I have tasted a few!). I have no idea what to expect of tomorrow Bealach Na Ba challenge. I don’t think it matters how difficult it may be. I’m here now and the only way forward is over that hill. Fish, chips and the crumble seem to be getting on just fine in my stomach, so I’m away to bed. I say bed..
